British Red Cross responds to the latest statistics on channel crossings
Responding to the latest statistics on channel crossings and asylum, Mubeen Bhutta, Director of Policy for the British Red Cross, said:
“Today’s figures show too many people are still risking their lives in search of safety. Behind these numbers are real men, women and children, who have already experienced unimaginable trauma. For the vast majority of people, there is no way to claim asylum in the UK without already being here.
“As part of plans to reduce the number of people making these dangerous journeys, the government must focus their efforts on expanding and investing in safe and practical routes for people to seek asylum. This will be the most effective way of reducing these numbers and, most importantly, preventing further loss of life.”
