British Red Cross welcomes Mayor of Lowestoft as new Mobility Aids Service centre opens

29 January 2025

The British Red Cross has officially opened a new home for its Mobility Aids Service in Lowestoft, welcoming the town’s Mayor to mark the occasion.

The new centre, located on Whapload Road, follows the service’s relocation from Gorleston and will continue supporting people across Norfolk and Waveney who need short-term access to mobility equipment.

The Mobility Aids Service provides short-term loans of wheelchairs and mobility equipment to people aged five and over. The service supports a wide range of people, including those waiting for NHS wheelchair services, individuals recovering after surgery, holidaymakers, and children who may need temporary support following accidents, such as falls or scooter injuries.

The service also operates from centres in Norwich and King’s Lynn, helping hundreds of people maintain their mobility and independence when they need it most.

Councillor Nasima Begum, Mayor of Lowestoft, officially opened the new centre by cutting the ribbon and celebrating with the team. She said:

“Thank you so much to the British Red Cross for inviting me today. I really enjoyed learning more about the service and the practical support it provides to the community. The people of Lowestoft are delighted to welcome you to the town.”

The Lowestoft Mobility Aids Service is open daily from 10am to 2pm at 209B Whapload Road, Lowestoft, Suffolk, NR32 1UL. People can reserve equipment, collect items, or arrange delivery for a small charge. On-site parking is available to help customers load equipment safely.

Cally Smith, British Red Cross Mobility Aids Service Manager, said:

“This is a very special moment for our team. It has been a long time coming, and we’re so pleased to finally be settled in our new Lowestoft home.

“Although we’ve moved location, our commitment remains the same. We’ve been supporting people across Norfolk and Waveney for the past 20 years, and we’re proud to continue doing so.

“A huge thank you to our fantastic staff and volunteers who helped make this possible. We are always happy to welcome new Customer Service Volunteers — even a few hours a week can make a real difference.”
