Myanmar Earthquake: “We are at a tipping point” says Red Cross, as teams continue to respond to huge humanitarian need

Five days after the catastrophic 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, the British Red Cross urgently appeals for support to prevent the crisis from escalating further.

Responding in 40°C heat, the earthquake threatens many more lives as shelter and water become critical issues. The collapse of infrastructure has left communities vulnerable, with a high risk of waterborne diseases. As the monsoon season approaches, ensuring adequate shelter is paramount.

The earthquake has covered an area of more than 18.3 million people. In the face of this devastation, the MRCS has mobilized hundreds of trained volunteers to provide urgent assistance. Within hours, MRCS activated its Emergency Operations Center and launched search and rescue efforts. Volunteers are administering first aid, providing pre-hospital care, distributing emergency relief items such as blankets, tarpaulins, and hygiene kits, and deploying mobile health teams to the most affected communities as well as providing water. They are also helping to reconnect families who have been separated by this crisis.

Richard Blewitt, British Red Cross Executive Director for International, said:

“This is a huge disaster, and we have yet to fully understand its true scale. We are at a tipping point, with a vital window of opportunity to respond to advert further tragedy. We must address basic humanitarian needs, including providing water, shelter and healthcare.

“Myanmar Red Cross teams are deeply rooted in their communities and are uniquely positioned to provide support. From lifesaving search and rescue, to distributing essential aid, they will be there for the hours, days and weeks to come. The best way to help us continue to support this lifesaving work is to donate to the British Red Cross Myanmar Earthquake Appeal.”

The British Red Cross has launched a Myanmar Earthquake Appeal. If you can please donate to help us provide vital humanitarian support for those that need it most. To donate, visit Myanmar Earthquake Emergency, or call 0300 023 0814.
