British Red Cross announces new appeal to empower women through UK Aid Match
The British Red Cross is kicking off its 150th year with a campaign called, It Starts With Her, to show how women in the UK can change the lives of women in one of the most disaster prone places on the planet.
The charity will be supporting women’s small businesses to thrive, through training and small cash grants, so that women can earn enough money to not only financially support their families, but also build savings for the future – making them more resilient to cope with the everyday and during crisis.
Workplace training will bring about new opportunities for women – for example as a tailor, scrap metal dealer or welding mechanic. The money raised will help them access business mentors and apprenticeships to support them to stay in work.
When strong women come together, they are powerful. That’s why British Red Cross is setting up Women’s Squads and community discussions to raise awareness of issues that directly affect women, for example, menstrual health, gender-based violence and advice on how to start up a new business.
Zoe Abrams, Executive Director of Communications and Advocacy, British Red Cross said:
“Our new appeal It Starts With Her will make use of our 150 years of experience to help women in vulnerable communities be better prepared for when the worst happens.
“When women come together, they are powerful and in the wake of a crisis that strength is needed more than ever. When it comes to picking up the pieces, rebuilding lives and creating a sustainable future that reaches every single corner of a community in the aftermath, it starts with her. Which is why we think building women’s resilience is worth investing in.”
International Development Secretary, Alok Sharma, said:
"If we empower women and girls today, we are making sure future generations thrive and grow. That is why we are backing the British Red Cross It Starts With Her UK Aid Match appeal which will train women across Bangladesh with the skills and knowledge they need to grow their own businesses, lifting them and their families out of poverty.
“Through UK Aid Match every pound the British public donates to this appeal will be doubled, meaning their generosity will go twice as far.”
All public donations made to It Starts With Her from 10 January 2020 to 7 April 2020 will fund British Red Cross overseas work and will be matched by the UK government up to £2 million. This includes cash and eligible stock donations. Every pound you give will be doubled by the UK government to build sustainable livelihoods and safer communities in Bangladesh.
