When hiker Claire Nelson went on a solo hike in the desert, she fell and broke her pelvis. She managed to stay alive for four days before being rescued.

This discussion activity looks at what she might have learned from this experience, the importance of resilience and preparation, and how learners can apply this to activities that carry a risk in their own lives.

Resource overview

1. Discussion: “I nearly died this week”

Learners look at the Twitter posts telling the story and discuss how she managed to survive, what she might have learned, and what she might do differently in future.

2. Discussion: Building resilience

Learners consider any activities they do that might carry a risk and think about the importance of resilience and ways of preparing in order to avoid emergencies.
