Refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people are rarely far from the news headlines, but has this always been the case?

This short activity compares a painting of a refugee family from the 1930s with a photo of a family who fled the violence in Myanmar in 2018. Learners will consider the challenges both may have to face, and their shared humanity.

Resource overview

1. Photo activity: Two images, two stories
Learners share initial thoughts on the images individually.

2. Discussion: Compare and contrast
Learners compare and contrast the images, considering what they might have in common and what they would want to ask the people in the images.
