How to hire your wheelchair

Step-by-step guide to hiring a wheelchair:

  2. Enter your postcode
  3. Choose your wheelchair type, and add your body measurements and weight.
  4. Pick the delivery date – we offer next weekday delivery if you book before 12:00pm the day before.*
  5. Tell us how long you’ll need the wheelchair (minimum hire is 1 week).
  6. Complete your booking with your contact and delivery details. We can only deliver to a home address.

*Next weekday delivery is subject to availability and not guaranteed.

Wheelchairs you can hire


Our wheelchairs are:

  • suitable for anyone over the age of 5
  • available in a wide range of sizes fitted with footrests
  • standard weight (lightweight models not available)
  • supplied with leg elevators, cushions and stump supports at no extra cost – just ask!

If you’re not sure about the size, call 0300 456 1914. We may have to charge for an exchange if you order the wrong size.

  • bariatric – for heavier users (available in either self-propelled or transit)

Why do we charge for our service?

The Mobility Aids service is a social enterprise side of the British Red Cross. This means any money we get goes directly towards supporting our vital work. Our aim is to keep the service affordable while still contributing to those important causes. 

How do I extend my hire?

To extend your wheelchair hire, please call 0300 456 1914. Payment will be taken when you extend your hire because we don’t store card details.

How can I donate to the Mobility Aids Service?

You can donate to the British Red Cross online. If you would like your donation to directly support the Mobility Aids Service, please call 0300 456 1914.

Do you accept donations of mobility items?

Unfortunately, we cannot accept donations of mobility items in most of the UK. However, if you are in Hampshire, Norfolk and Waveney, or Northern Ireland, mobility aid donations may be accepted. Please visit our local wheelchair service page to find a local number and enquire.

Are the wheelchairs lightweight?

No, all wheelchairs are a standard weight for your comfort and safety. Lightweight models are not available.

Do you accept payment via bank transfer? Can I pay by direct debit?

We do not accept bank transfers or direct debit. All payments must be made by card, either over the phone or at the time of booking online. If you are collecting equipment in person, cash payment may be available in certain locations.

Can I pay the hire charges weekly?

You can choose how often you pay for your hire. Some people prefer to pay the full amount upfront, while others pay weekly to spread the cost. Please note that extensions can only be arranged over the phone, and we require card payment as we do not store card details.

Do the hire charges change the longer I hire the wheelchair?

No, our hire charges remain the same throughout the rental period at a flat rate of £22 per week. The cost does not change based on the length of hire.

How do I return the wheelchair?

To arrange your wheelchair return, please call 0300 456 1914 or email wheelchaircollections@redcross.org.uk with your booking reference and preferred collection date and we will be happy to reserve this for you. 

We don’t automatically collect equipment at the end of the hire, so it’s important to contact us ahead of your agreed return date to schedule your collection.
